I have a confession: I have spent an unreasonable amount of time in 2026 staring at my Avowed character's face and asking, 'So... which god sneezed on me?' That is the core joke of being a Godlike in Obsidian's world. You are not just a person with a destiny; you are a person with a divine fingerprint, and apparently nobody bothered to leave a return address. The calendar says 2026, which means I can no longer pretend Avowed is a distant rumor and not a game I have been arguing about with friends.

The One Thing You Cannot Escape: You Are Godlike

Avowed shares its setting with Pillars of Eternity, Obsidian's acclaimed CRPG series. In those games, you can pick from the usual six-race buffet. In Avowed, the buffet is closed: you are Godlike, period. No sneaking off to be a perfectly ordinary farmer with a sword. You are touched by divinity whether you like it or not, and your face is the receipt.

Godlikes are children born to humanoids, or kith, who have been touched or blessed by one of the gods of Eora. This manifests physically depending on which god was involved. A Fire Godlike blessed by Magran may have devilish horns and glowing red eyes. A Nature Godlike is often covered by fungus and other nature-y bits. I love that the gods apparently express affection through moss. It is not exactly a Hallmark card, but it is memorable.

A Mysterious Blessing With Great Bone Structure

In the gameplay deep dive released by Obsidian after Summer Game Fest, we see that the player-character is a Godlike with lichen growing around their eyes. I saw that and thought, finally, a fantasy protagonist who looks like they fell asleep in a damp terrarium. The player gets to choose which manifestation their character has. Some are large and dramatic. Others, like the lichen look in the footage, are more subtle. In 2026, I appreciate a game that lets me be a divine mystery and still fuss over cheekbones.

Game director Carrie Patel put it plainly: 'In Avowed, you are definitely a Godlike, and being a Godlike will manifest in a number of different ways. Either way, you have a connection to one of the gods, but the thing that's unique about you is that you don't know which one.' That is a fantastic hook. It is also deeply funny to me. Imagine being blessed by a god and the god forgets to sign the paperwork.

This is part of the mystery of your character and will certainly play into the larger narrative. It is atypical for a Godlike not to know which god was involved with their birth. Tekēhu in Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, for instance, is constantly referring to the goddess of the sea, Ondra, who he sees as a sort of patron. Tekēhu knows his divine lane. My Avowed character is apparently driving without GPS.

Choosing the Flavor of Your Divine Weirdness

The fact that your physical appearance is customisable might mean your patron god is not one associated with any particular force or element. That is a neat little lore wrinkle. In the series thus far, we have seen several flavors of Godlike, and each one gives me a new reason to stare at character creation like it owes me money.

Godlike flavor What I expect at character creation
🔥 Fire Horns, glowing red eyes, and a strong need for sunscreen
🌿 Nature Fungus, lichen, and the vibe of a very damp terrarium
🌙 Moon Mysterious glow, probably an unhealthy sleep schedule
💀 Death Dramatic bone bits and a personality that says do not ask
🐦 Avian Feathers, sharp angles, and a suspicious relationship with heights
🌊 Marine Aquatic details and the eternal smell of the sea
⏳ Endings The feeling that your birthday is also a countdown
🗡️ Skaen Quiet menace and a smile that makes taverns go silent

The list of Death, Moon, Fire, Nature, Avian, Marine, Endings and Skaen Godlikes is a lovely reminder that Eora's gods have range. Some blessings are loud. Some are subtle. Some look like a skincare routine gone feral. Since any kith race can be Godlike, the pre-release material pointed toward still choosing a base race such as Human, Aumaua, Dwarf, Elf or Orlan. That means I can be a divine enigma and still have a very specific opinion about my character's jawline.

Why This Hook Still Works in 2026

What I like most about Avowed's Godlike premise is that it is not just a cosmetic gimmick. It is a narrative engine. You have a connection to one of the gods, but you do not know which one. That means every temple, every priest, every strange dream, and every NPC with a knowing smirk becomes a potential clue. It also means my character can be both special and clueless, which is honestly my default state in most RPGs.

So yes, I will absolutely spend far too long choosing between dramatic horns and subtle lichen. I will absolutely pretend I am above character creation, then restart three times. And I will absolutely keep asking the important question: if a god blessed me, why did they leave no note, no receipt, and no customer service number? In Avowed, that mystery is the point, and I am here for it. 🎮
