In the sun-drenched streets of Paradis, the Envoy stumbles upon a silver-haired alchemist named Sapiento de Falva who looks like he’s just swallowed a sour plum. The man’s exotic shipment of luminous adra—a rare, potent version of the stuff usually reserved for juicing up unique weapons—has gone missing. Naturally, he assumes theft, not postal incompetence. After all, who would lose a crate that literally glows in the dark? The Envoy, ever the helpful soul, accepts the task to retrieve the precious cargo. Little do they know, this side quest will send them chasing cryptic scholars, brawling with over-leveled smugglers, and questioning the life choices that led them to trust a dwarf with a boat.

The Scholar Runaround: Three Conversations Too Many

Why do fantasy quests always involve asking three different NPCs who all claim someone else knows better? The Envoy’s first stop is Scholar Guneth, loitering in the Underbelly of Paradis. She offers a masterclass in unhelpfulness: “Oh, I don’t have the info, but maybe that guy in the Sparrowhawks district does.” Great. Depending on how far one has pushed the main story, the Sparrowhawks area is either a friendly neighborhood or a warzone filled with enemies who’ve never heard of a cease-fire. Regardless, Scholar Remio stands there, ready to pass the buck again. “Try the main gate," he says, polishing his spectacles. "The spot where you were, ahem, shot upon arrival.” Ah yes, nostalgia.

Finally, Scholar Adelgund at the main gate delivers actual useful information. She points the Envoy toward Castol’s Folly, a tiny island southeast of Paradis, overrun with dwarven smugglers who apparently treat deliveries like optional suggestions. One can almost hear the Envoy mutter, “Couldn’t she have been the first person I talked to?”

Castol’s Folly: An Island of Pain and Poor Decisions

Picked up early in the game, Precious Light quickly reveals itself as a brutal difficulty spike. The smugglers on Castol’s Folly flex muscles that laugh at underleveled adventurers. Many a cocky Envoy has waltzed in only to be sent back to the loading screen with a bruised ego. The wise player postpones this trip until their gear doesn’t resemble wet cardboard.

Once strong enough, the Envoy carves a path through the ruffians, leaving behind a trail of regrets and broken barrels. At the heart of the island sits Captain Trevik, a dwarf who miraculously finds his voice after most of his crew has been turned into loot pinatas. He pleads for mercy, claiming the adra crate sank to the bottom of the sea—because of course it did. Now his lot wants to repay a debt to the Vailian Trading Company using other cargo, and he needs the Envoy to smooth things over. The sheer audacity: “Sorry we lost your macguffin; could you please do our paperwork?”

A Captain’s Fate: Help the Bearded Scoundrel or Walk Away?

At this crossroads, the Envoy must make a classic RPG choice. The quest doesn’t punish either path with a game over, but it does mess with one’s sense of justice. Two options present themselves:

  • 🗡️ Help the smugglers: Take the Adra Crate from Trevik and approach Captain Evina Bardatto of the Vailian Trading Company near the Southern Embrace Party Camp. This is where diplomacy goes to die. Evina doesn’t negotiate; she attacks, convinced she can flatten one more meddling envoy. The player must defeat her and her posse. It’s messy, but it clears the debt and gives the dwarves a fighting chance.

  • 🏃 Abandon the smugglers: Ignore Trevik’s tearful eyes and fast-travel straight back to Sapiento. Hand over the crate, collect the reward, and pretend those dwarves were just a fever dream. No immediate fight, but who knows what consequences lurk later? This world has a long memory.

The “Peaceful” Return: Spoiler, It’s Also a Fight

Opting to help the smugglers leads the Envoy to confront Evina Bardatto. Despite attempts to barter—maybe offer a heartfelt speech, a bouquet, or a vaguely threatening haiku—she responds with steel. Defeat her, and the Vailian Trading Company’s claim evaporates along with her aggression. The Envoy can then return the adra to Sapiento with a clear conscience, or at least one cluttered by the memory of dodging fireballs.

On the other hand, taking the abandonment route gives the Envoy the satisfaction of immediate gratification. No Evina fight, no smugglers to babysit. Just a quick hand-in. The Fantastic Alembic reward item might not soothe a guilty soul, but it sure looks good in the inventory.

Loose Ends and Luminous Rewards

Whether the Envoy emerges from this fiasco as a diplomat who tried and failed to talk or as a master of tactical desertion, the tangible rewards remain the same:

  • 💰 300 cp – enough for a decent potion or two, or the seventeenth lockpick the player absolutely needs.

  • 977 XP – a healthy chunk that nudges that stubborn experience bar forward, especially welcome early on.

  • 🧪 The Fantastic Alembic – a trinket with a name so boastful it must do something useful. Spoiler: it’s a craftable item that boosts potion-making, turning even a humble health flask into a miracle cure.

In the end, Precious Light serves up more than just a side quest; it delivers a microcosm of Avowed’s moral ambiguity. Are the smugglers victims of circumstance or architects of their own disaster? Does the Envoy truly care, or is the allure of glowing adra too shiny to ignore? The only certainty is that next time Sapiento de Falva orders something exotic, he should probably spring for insured shipping—and maybe avoid dwarven couriers who can’t keep a crate afloat.
